Artist Bio

Living and working out of Stafford, VA, Caroline LePire earned her BFA in Art and Visual Technology at George Mason University in 2018, where she focused primarily on drawing and fantasy illustration. She is working to build a more active online presence for the promotion and sale of her art, through platforms such as DeviantArt, Facebook, and her own personal website. Caroline has many disparate interests that find their way into her art, including ancient history, mythology and folklore, anime and manga, dream symbolism, and video games. Her current projects include a science fantasy Role-Playing Game and a mythology-based Collectible Card Game, as well as several ongoing worlds she has been building stories around over the years. Her artwork has also been featured in exhibition at Baltimore’s Lighthole and used commercially in the game Etheremon.

Artist Statement

I approach my art-making as if every illustration were opening a portal into another dimension, full of mystical unrealities and whimsical impossibilities. Fueled by a lifetime of fantasy and science fiction movies, television shows, comics, and games, I draw particular inspiration from worlds and ideas found in the card game Magic: the Gathering, traditional role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, and JRPGs such as the Final Fantasy series. Interests as far-ranging as ancient history, Jungian psychology, world mythology, Victorian ephemera, and the natural sciences provide further material in crafting my worlds. Dreams hold special significance to me, and my most vivid reveries form the basis for much new work. Feminine figures feature prominently in my pieces, and provide surrogate alter-egos for different aspects of my personality. Within my art, I let my conscious mind tame and synthesize the chaotic imagery of both my dreams and my subconscious to yield tangible and coherent visions no less ethereal and surreal than the realm from which they sprung. Ephemeral, flowing lines swirl about the canvas, whirling and coalescing to reveal windows into lands unseen and stories untold. Pencil, marker, and pastel are combined to become the keys to unlocking new doors of perception, beckoning viewers to abandon the tethers of dull reality and step inside.
